Indonesia: Endless Reasons to Visit

Indonesia is one of those destinations that is almost impossible to summarise. The world’s largest archipelago stretches across 17,000 islands between the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and each one feels like a completely different country.

Active volcanoes rising above rice terraces, ancient Hindu temples in the middle of tropical jungle, world-class surf breaks, the most biodiverse marine life on the planet, and cities that pulse with energy and culture. Indonesia has been shaped by Indian, Chinese, Dutch, and Japanese influences over centuries, and the result is a country with a cultural depth and variety that genuinely takes your breath away.

Why Visit Indonesia?

Bali and So Much More: Bali is extraordinary, rice terraces, temple ceremonies, world-class surf, and a spiritual atmosphere unlike anywhere else. But Indonesia is 17,000 islands. Lombok is quieter and equally beautiful. Komodo has dragons and untouched reefs. Java has ancient temples that rival Angkor Wat. The country rewards exploration endlessly.

Nature on an Overwhelming Scale: Active volcanoes you can hike before sunrise, ancient rainforests home to orangutans and proboscis monkeys, coral reefs teeming with life, Indonesia’s natural world is genuinely humbling. Bali Indonesia tours often include volcano treks and rice terrace walks that stay with people forever.

Ancient Culture and Spiritual Depth: Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim country, yet Bali remains a deeply Hindu island with daily ceremonies, temple offerings, and a spiritual rhythm to daily life that visitors find genuinely moving. Yogyakarta is home to Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist temple, and Prambanan, a stunning ninth-century Hindu complex.

The Food is Exceptional: Nasi goreng, slow-cooked rendang, charcoal-grilled satay with peanut sauce, fresh gado-gado salad, Indonesian food is bold, fragrant, and deeply satisfying. Eating at a local warung for the equivalent of a pound or two is one of the great pleasures of travelling here.

Diving and Snorkelling at World-Class Levels: The Coral Triangle, covering much of Indonesian waters, contains more marine species than anywhere else on earth. Raja Ampat, Komodo, Bunaken, and the Liberty Wreck in Bali are among the world’s finest dive sites.

Top Things to Do in Indonesia

  • Bali Rice Terraces — Tegallalang & Jatiluwih: Iconic stepped rice paddies carved into hillsides over centuries. Walking through them early morning with the mist still hanging is genuinely magical.

  • Mount Batur Sunrise Trek: A pre-dawn hike up an active volcano to watch the sunrise over Bali. One of the most popular and rewarding experiences on any Bali Indonesia tour package.

  • Borobudur Temple, Yogyakarta: The world’s largest Buddhist temple, built in the ninth century and surrounded by jungle and volcanic mountains. Absolutely extraordinary at sunrise.

  • Komodo National Park: See Komodo dragons in the wild, snorkel pristine reefs, and explore pink sand beaches on one of Indonesia’s most remote and rewarding island groups.

  • Ubud, Bali: The cultural heart of Bali. Traditional dance performances, art markets, healing retreats, cooking classes, and the Sacred Monkey Forest all within walking distance.

  • Seminyak & Canggu, Bali: Bali’s most stylish beach neighbourhoods. Sunset beach clubs, great restaurants, surf breaks, and boutique shopping in a genuinely beautiful coastal setting.

  • Raja Ampat, West Papua: Widely regarded as the world’s best diving destination. Remote, stunning, and completely unlike anywhere else on earth.

  • Tanah Lot Temple, Bali: A sea temple perched on a rocky outcrop surrounded by ocean. The most photographed sunset spot in all of Bali and justifiably so.

  • Orangutan Watching, Borneo: Seeing wild orangutans in their natural rainforest habitat is one of the most moving wildlife experiences available anywhere in the world.

  • Gili Islands: Three tiny islands off Lombok with no motorised vehicles, turquoise water, sea turtles, and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit

May to September: It is the dry season and the best time for an Indonesia tour. Clear skies, calm seas, and ideal conditions for diving, trekking, and beach holidays across most of the archipelago.

October to April: It is the wet season, though in Bali this rarely means all-day rain. Brief tropical downpours are common in the afternoons, but mornings are usually clear and the landscape becomes lush and intensely green. Prices are lower and crowds thinner.

Bali: It is worth visiting year-round. Even during wet season the island remains beautiful and the cultural experiences are unaffected by weather.
