Singapore: The City That Does Everything Brilliantly
Singapore is tiny. At just 724 square kilometres, it is one of the smallest countries in the world. And yet somehow it manages to be one of the busiest ports on the planet, a leading global financial centre, and one of Asia’s most visited and genuinely loved travel destinations.
What makes Singapore so special is not any single thing, it is the combination. Futuristic architecture sitting alongside colonial shophouses, hawker centres serving some of the best food in Asia for a few dollars, world-class gardens in the middle of a gleaming city, and a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Western cultures that creates something completely unique.

A Food City Like No Other: Singapore takes its food seriously, and the results speak for themselves. From Michelin-starred hawker stalls serving chicken rice to world-class restaurants overlooking the marina, eating your way through Singapore is genuinely one of life’s great pleasures.
Immaculately Clean and Incredibly Safe: Singapore is one of the safest and most well-organised cities in the world. Getting around is effortless, English is spoken everywhere, and everything just works. For UK travellers it feels familiar and exotic at the same time.
Architecture That Genuinely Impresses: Marina Bay Sands, the Supertrees at Gardens by the Bay, the historic streets of Chinatown and Little India, Jewel Changi Airport with its indoor waterfall, Singapore puts real thought into how things look and feel.
Perfect as a Stopover or a Full Holiday: Many people visit Singapore as part of a Singapore and Bali tour or a wider Asia itinerary, but it absolutely holds its own as a standalone destination. Three to four days here feels both full and satisfying.
Great for Every Type of Traveller: Families love the attractions and safety. Couples enjoy the rooftop bars and romantic waterfront dining. Solo travellers appreciate how easy it is to navigate. Singapore tours work brilliantly for everyone.
Top Things to Do in Singapore
-
Marina Bay Sands: The iconic three-tower hotel with its rooftop infinity pool is the defining image of modern Singapore. The view from the top at night is extraordinary.
-
Gardens by the Bay: The Supertree Grove light show at night is one of those travel moments that genuinely lives up to the hype. The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome are equally impressive.
-
Hawker Centres: Maxwell Food Centre, Lau Pa Sat, and Newton Food Centre are the heart of Singapore’s food culture. Grab a table, order from multiple stalls, and eat like a local.
-
Sentosa Island: Universal Studios Singapore, S.E.A. Aquarium, cable cars, and beautiful beaches all on one island just minutes from the city centre.
-
Singapore Botanic Gardens: A UNESCO World Heritage Site and a genuinely beautiful green escape in the middle of the city. The National Orchid Garden is particularly stunning.
-
Chinatown & Little India: Two of Singapore’s most colourful and atmospheric neighbourhoods, full of temples, street food, local shops, and cultural character.
-
Clarke Quay: The riverside entertainment district where Singapore comes alive at night. Restaurants, bars, and boat rides along the Singapore River.
-
Night Safari: The world’s first nocturnal wildlife park. Watching animals in their natural nighttime habitat is a completely different experience from any daytime zoo.
-
Orchard Road: Singapore’s legendary shopping boulevard. Whether you are a serious shopper or just enjoy the atmosphere, it is worth a stroll.
-
Jewel Changi Airport: Even if you are not flying, visiting Changi Airport just for the indoor waterfall, gardens, and food options is completely worth it. It is regularly voted the world’s best airport for good reason.
Best Time to Visit
February to April: It is the best time to visit Singapore. The weather is at its most pleasant, warm and sunny with lower humidity and less rainfall than the rest of the year. Perfect for exploring the city on foot and making the most of outdoor attractions.
Singapore is warm year-round at around 25-32°C, so visiting outside this window is still perfectly enjoyable. Brief tropical showers can happen at any time but they pass quickly and rarely disrupt a full day.
November to January: It brings the northeast monsoon season with heavier rainfall, worth keeping in mind when planning, though it rarely impacts indoor attractions.
